The 2003 closure of his university, Palestine Polytechnic University, during the Second Intifada was a turning point for Amro. Postawiono im fałszywy zarzut uczestnictwa i wznoszenia flag Federacji Rosyjskiej [sic!], co szybko bezmyślnie powieliły media głównego nurtu i podchwyciła rosyjska propaganda. Ze względu na ciągnący się konflikt o nominację ambasadorów między rządem a prezydentem na miejscu nie było polskiej ambasadorki, uniemożliwiając interwencję na stosownym poziomie i podstawiając grupę na łasce notorycznie skorumpowanej lokalnej administracji.
