2SLGBTQ Canadians angry and anxious this Pride season, but determined to fight on
  • BadgerBadgerBadger BadgerBadgerBadger 1y ago 100%

It is, but we have kids and quite frankly I'm not about to put them at risk of being screamed at, or my house at risk of attack. My neighbours are amazing and we get on really well with them, but it's not them I'm bothered about. It's the random nutter radicalised by the idiots across the border and Pierre fucking Polievre

A week before Pride last year, my town was dripping in rainbows. The march is this coming Saturday and I have seen maybe 4 or 5 in town and all on businesses, people are nervous .

We've decided that we'd rather not risk marking our house out and aren't putting one up either.

  • Oak Island aka "The Money Pit"
  • BadgerBadgerBadger BadgerBadgerBadger 1y ago 100%

17 years ago my husband and I were visiting a friend in Nova Scotia to see if we wanted to move here (we did) and she knew Dan Blenkinship and arranged for a private tour of the site, so we got to see the money pit, 10X and had tea with Dan and his wife. A great experience to have after reading about Oak Island as Brit kid

I was recently called a "Gay Elder" and at 53 that was something of a jolt. But it reminded me of the gay elders I used to know when I was a baby gay just starting to make my way in the world in the late 80's. I have fond memories of Richard "Mother" who was mother to all of us fledglings, so caring and loving and worried about us, a sweet guy who I guess would be in his 80's or 90's now, I wish I remembered his stories. I've recently been listening to a lot of podcasts, particularly the gay hosted ones and have been engrossed in Making Gay History https://makinggayhistory.com/. I highly recommend your checking it out.. So this is for us to share our gay histories, our personal ones, the ones we've recently heard or discovered, and the stories that should be told to those who come after us, so they know who fought for their liberation and can be inspired to keep fighting, because until we all are liberated, then none of us are.

    New Community - Gay History

I just created a new community Gay History https://lemmy.ca/c/sharinggayhistory I'm a big fan of the Making Gay History Podcast and recently have seen a fair number of tumblr posts and comments about younger LGBT folk not knowing their history. So, a resource for those stories and histories of the Lesbian, Gay and Trans people upon whose shoulders we stand.

Why did/do people refer to TV as "boob tube"?

My kid refused to believe me when I told him that I grew up with an electron gun in the house that fired accelerated particles at a screen, he stated that simply couldn't be safe and no one would allow that. I told him that was the 70's for you

  • Anyone know of any sci-fi fiction with interesting takes on gender/sexuality/biology?
  • BadgerBadgerBadger BadgerBadgerBadger 1y ago 100%

I've just finished The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz.

I thought was an interesting discourse about urbanism, capitalism, gender and environmentalism. It fell a bit flat in parts, but the ideas around personhood and responsibility were thoughtfully done.

  • From one man who knits to all who make their way here, a hearty welcome. Gay brothers, straight brothers, trans brothers, all are welcome no matter how skilled in the craft you are. I set this up for those of us in Canada with stash accumulation addictions. So if you have yarn you bought because it was pretty, or inherited (like me) or you just want to destash so you can restash, then here you can sell it, donate it, or exchange it.

I created a couple of knit/yarn communities today

I hated Reddit towards the end and I'm loving the Fediverse, it feels like the internet of the 90's

Tomorrow many subreddits will open up again, will you switch back to Reddit or stay on Lemmy (or use both)
  • BadgerBadgerBadger BadgerBadgerBadger 1y ago 100%

I'll be staying here, I quite reddit a while back and I prefer the fediverse to the corporate hellsites

  • How will you use Lemmy?
  • BadgerBadgerBadger BadgerBadgerBadger 1y ago 100%

Just a reproduction of the old r/yarn on the other site, a place to swap, sell and give away yarn. I thought I would set up a Canada only version

I like it so far, been trying to create a community all day and that hasn't worked though, but I'm patient

  • What to do about neighbours with F*CK Trudeau flag
  • BadgerBadgerBadger BadgerBadgerBadger 1y ago 100%

Express your appreciation of the flag, agree that yes indeed Trudeau is very fuckable and you can see why they want to express that desire in flag based form

  • How are you dealing with all these new anti-trans/LGBTQ+ laws?
  • BadgerBadgerBadger BadgerBadgerBadger 1y ago 100%

I bounce between being angrily out and worried about the safety of my family. I'm not worried so much about the politicians here in Canada, I don't believe that the the alt right rhetoric will win them government, but I do worry about the nutjobs they will inspire to act out violently.

I noticed this year that while my town was drowning in rainbows this time last year, there are maybe 2 or 3 on businesses and I haven't seen one on houses this year.

So, sadly, m'husband and I have agreed that there will be no Pride flag on the house this year and we'll walk the pride march with a careful eye on the protesters who will turn up.
