From one ketchup connoisseur to another, I started with and continue to eat crackers, cheese, and ketchup. Saltine crackers, like the crappy soup kind (don't get anything fancy), Cheddar cheese (mild works but sharp is a better hit), and then whatever ketchup but I tend to do heinz or store brands since it tends to have more of a vinegary taste.

Lemmy's kinda helped me see a different perspective. It's just old man talk. Like, the internet is still there. Everything that once was, still is. Just a lot more shit the rest of everyone is usually using. Stop trying to keep up with everyone using all these popular sites for everyday life like they did with TV. Find obscure websites and dedicated forums for your topic. Don't rely on Google^tm^ to find the internet for you. Before, you actually had to find a site (magazines, social/network circles) then hope that site had a search function if you're looking for something particular (this is the old internet everyone craves lol, it wasn't perfect by any means/rose tinted glasses).

You can use the internet just like you did back in the day and have the same experience. It's just that the majority of the world uses the connection for a "TV"-like feed with main popular sites and apps. There's still more people using and improving the "old internet" compared to the 90's, so it's only a net positive in my book.

allow me to be the batshit representative from lemmy.ml to argue with you :P

Honestly, I just hate the instance bashing. Most people didn't have a real informed "choice" when it comes to their first instance. This seemed like an instance with good uptime and connectivity to me compared to the single admin instance I had before, the only factor that really matters to me. I see what you're saying about % of users, but those people exist on every instance and like you said, they can just jump over and make a new account. If I'm being judged by the .ml next to my name and not the content of my reply, then they were really never going to listen to anything I had to say regardless, so I've decided to stay with this instance.

I think you're seeing more arguments on those instances because it's more of a melting pot. People who all agree with each other's perspectives and have similar life experience aren't going to have a lot to discuss besides patting each other on the backs and talking about subtle nuances of the subject matter. I do agree with your entire premise of the downvotes, which is why I'm replying to begin with. I like the thought of a downvote system, something that would hinder off-topic or abusive material, but it's just horribly abused by users.

A proper system would see two competing articles and the one which provides the most information with a legible format would be upvoted the most. Now it's which one has the most comments, what user uploaded it, what website was the article published on, which headline is catchier regardless of the article's own words being taken out of context, what instance/community is this being posted on, etc etc.

Maybe I'm just confused and using this site and reddit wrong. From my conversations about downvotes, my understanding is less time is being spent on reading the article or links, and more just running through upvoting/downvoting like it's tinder matches. I don't get it because it's not like youtube suggestions where you're creating an algorithm for your likes/dislikes. You're just creating a general feed of populace attention-seeking content and creating the pattern for a hive mind to form.

I think any of the many solutions would be a step forward, votes being public (all your other interactions are public/not done anonymously, and likes/dislikes has no commonality to democratic voting so people need to stop conflating the two), blocking any downvotes like lemmynsfw.com successfully implemented (you can still report off topic, etc), can only dowvote in joined communities or content you've engaged with, and many other ideas. All sorts of solutions that will stop us from going down the same path as Reddit, luckily we have instances to experiment different approaches with that we can point to for data in the future. I guess I prefer more of a forum style but those always get overtaken by zealous admins/site ideology and eventually hyperactive community members meaning it's hard or not worth the effort to actually engage with the drama surrounding the subject you want to discuss (even some shroom forums get like this, absolutely crazy).

I'm not sure on the technical aspect but I think "instance blocking" should be an OPT-IN message sent to users of the instance. For example, say lemmy.world wanted to block lemmy.ml, hexbear, and reddthat. Each instance is added to a "Suggested blocked instance" setting in your profile and a message is sent to the user notifying them the opt-in option is available. Could have a whole list with descriptions besides the instances for why the suggested block option is there. Users would be informed with an actionable option and not automatically opted in. Could just be a toggle-able switch list in user settings.

Lemmy's number one ambassador explains why Lemmy is an effective alternative to Reddit.... did they? Seems more like an introduction to using the lemmyverse, not a presentation of being an effective alternative besides that other social media sites don't have the user base that this site does.

This all seems like weird circlejerking of an administrator.

oh, number 2 is worse than you think. I picked up on a talk show on the radio the other night with a guest author who wrote, "Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion". They're actively teaching to avoid empathy,

In Toxic Empathy, Allie Beth Stuckey argues that empathy has become a tool of manipulation by left-wing activists who bully people into believing that they must adopt progressive positions to be loving. She explores the five most heated issues through which toxic empathy is deployed: abortion, gender, sexuality, immigration, and social justice.

This is what fills the airwaves around here of which a lot of elderly and rural citizens are inundated with daily.

This whole thread is wild with Lemmy expectations lol. Reddit is a link aggregation site, same as here. Are you wanting more artists and authors posting on here for it to be considered "original"? All the links to articles or sites people are posting....aren't really considered original. There are plenty of discussions going on that are original, but they tend to be upvoted less than posted link content so you have to usually search them out in the actual community.

If you're a real North Carolinian then you have friends, family, and neighbors who are Republican. You would know better than anyone what information gap and knowledge is being presented to them with local radio and their social circle. Stop spreading misinformation, that damns us all. Instead try to educate and show them the subtle difference in what's being presented to them and the logical fallacy the republican mindset leads to. There are no militia hunting down FEMA

abandoning door-to-door visits, after receiving threats that they could be targeted by a militia, officials said ... a man with an assault rifle who made a comment “about possibly harming” employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency

Authorities got a description of a suspect’s vehicle and license plate and later identified him as William Jacob Parsons, 44, of Bostic. Sheriff’s officials said in a statement that Parsons — who was armed with a handgun and a rifle — was charged with “going armed to the terror of the public,” a misdemeanor. He was released after posting bond. The sheriff’s office said initial reports indicated that a “truckload of militia” was involved in making the threat, but further investigation determined that Parsons acted alone.

IANAL but is that really true? You don't "Buy" anything on steam, you're licensing a subscription to use the software under their terms. Downloading a torrent wouldn't be covered by that. Purchasing a game though and having the same data backed up on a device is covered (identical to a torrent download), at least I thought that was the legal case for rom's and such even being able to exist in the first place.

So we're just basically considering statistically which is more plausible? A HDD failing versus a corporation being greedy? I think both are bad and unreliable. A company guaranteeing a "purchase" in perpetuity (not subscription) and having the standard be offline installers (for your own backup) is the best bet. Everything else is just dictating the best way to stub your toe.

An hour after that it's suspended, works well. My personal computer though, sometimes I shut off the monitor, most of the time I let it run for the day completely powered. I have yet to set any type of shutdown or standby because typically I use it more than I do my tv (work, gaming, videos, etc on the comp). I know there's some power conservation I need to consider for motivation, I have no security concern atm with my standard main account and everything private is layered so inaccessible. tl;dr what's everyone else's setup like for when they walk away from the computer?

If you're not being purposefully obtuse I'll save you the time from what the argument is. Wealth of his magnitude is a detriment to society, doesn't matter if he's saint Joseph or the pope. You're saying "he's the best kind", deflecting from all of them being bad. If you don't see that, then it's fine. Just an economical opinion on where to go with society from the stalemate we seem to be in regarding workers and compensation.

I do feel like you're being blind about the nepotism definitions though, you don't need 200 billion from a family slush fund to qualify. The very act of what their parent's profession is changes networking and exposure opportunities. Doesn't matter if Daddy has ethical values, the name recognition and reputation you're proclaiming gives an advantage.

I was first impressed with chrome book because of seeing them used for education, getting my own laptop during school would've been mindblowing to kid me. I was unimpressed with the strangulation process of the OS but again shocked when they added a linux boot mode. There needs to be better alternatives by now, I would be ok with an OS developed by the department of education in conjunction with higher educational institutions. Could have a decent non-profit approach to a browser and ad blockers could legitimately be built in as a "protect the children" aim of approach.

But that complacency isn't happening to everyone. A lot are just festering, slowly digesting more incredulous and radical propaganda/influencers. Every ones base reality of the events that are happening over the country is getting completely skewed by the new types of outlets like tiktok that they flock to because of the lack of accountability by our elected officials and journalists/news organizations.

During just this last hurricane Helene I've heard more anger and outrage about the government than anything to actually do about what's been hit or what the people and rescue workers are actually doing. This is how we get mass shooters and assassinations becoming more prolific, people aren't just complaining and going about their day. They're nodding and grinding their teeth while smiling.

Just wanted to throw in my reality living in a rural area and all the factors that lead into the same problem we have around here.

The walk to my middle school was 1 1/2 hours, 2 when distracted. All 4 lane highways, with no sidewalks. Bus drivers are in high demand with low pay/part time, bus routes can easily go into a 3 hour ride in the afternoon. There is typically 1 highschool per county (must keep the roster pool available for the sports teams), we're talking a 42 minute straight drive just to get there (so you can sit in trailers because they're over capacity).

They need to up the bus driver pay, de-stigmatize the position with people who are getting more than fair compensation so they can be proud of their work and a community member who very much actually, physically, is in the world of the growing citizens. Have an assistant who helps with the route and manages the adolescent children (bus shit was wild back in my day, like 3rd base shenanigans going on and I doubt it's stopped).

I guarantee you, no one having to drive through that shit-storm is enjoying or wanting that experience. Everyone's anxiety is high and they're still half asleep in the morning, with the potential to accidentally injure a child before you even get to work. Some of the counties have improved with better traffic techniques like time-regulated flow, roundabouts, and traffic assistants. But, it's still so depressing and makes you feel like you're in some industrial meat processing plant line.

It sucks either way. Having your kid get home at 6pm to start on homework (no internet on the bus, most assignments require connectivity) which can take hours, feed them, make sure they get ready for bed by 8-9, then start again at 5am because the bus shows up ass early before the world wakes up. Real public transit doesn't exist in a 80 mile radius around here, so there's really no other currently available options besides all the crappy scenarios being told that everyone rightfully hates.

oh no! That would be terrible but I could see it. I think going forward she might be the only one who can introduce humor in stressful situations (kinda like the guardians Drax). There's some good banter between Agatha and Teen but that's more for peaceful times.

  • Giving my perspective so far with the new show that I doubt most people are giving a watch (I was forced to try it lol). It's only 2 episodes in, the first episode I wasn't that impressed with. It seemed to be wrapping up other storylines and trying to branch into it's new, own thing. It was a confusing episode trying to get a grasp of what they were doing. But, with the previous enjoyment of wandavision (at least the first few episodes of it), I decided to push through. Then comes Episode 2, just completely blew me away. Not like it's a masterpiece but definitely feels like Marvel is attempting to let them do their own thing atm and is one of the best "Witch" related media since the Hocus Pocus original (made me realize that genre just completely fell off since the 90's with decently made stories that wasn't an action "van-helsing/hugh jackman" kinda thing. I'm really looking forward to where they might be taking this. --- ::: spoiler Spoiler for talking about some characters that show up but no plot points exposed With Episode 1 I felt like Aubrey Plaza was shoehorned in because of her status, she did nothing for the plot besides something that could've been fleshed out with the Teen character better. The Teen character itself I'm not too thrilled with *only* because of my confusion on the hierarchy of everything. He has good scenes, but his role seems to fluctuate for plot needs, just needs more fleshed out with him to be realistic but obviously this was a choice that was made. I really feel like I need to watch Wandavision again because the Agatha in this show seems completely different, I'm not sure if it's my perception from a show I watched over 3 years ago or if there's some Marvel rewriting shenanigans going on here. I definitely am interested in looking into the comic origin and storylines now though from this show. ::: --- I wanted to highlight the song in episode 2 as well, utterly beautiful. [Agatha All Along Coven Sings The Ballad of the Witches' Road Episode 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmd6S_EmsyA) (I'm trying to think of a better Marvel song, but now I can't even think of any real singing besides this one) Anyways, the 3rd episode drops in like 8 hours. Haven't followed a show while it's releasing in a while, and typically I don't, but I'm gonna try this one out. If it turns out great, awesome. If it's a horrible rest of the season, at least I can say I thoroughly enjoyed the hype of it while waiting for the next one. tl;dr Episode 1, a little rough going down and finding it's footing. Episode 2, really has me excited for a real witch show about witches (doesn't feel like Marvel). Episode 3 drops tonight.

I had a search saved from some months ago, went to check it for some references and got new hits involving local organizations that had nothing to do with the search. Opening up a private browser I see that the searches aren't 100% matching up either. I see this as only getting worse, I want to be able to enter a search and it searches for my query. I ran into an old movie I had on VHS as a kid titled ["MegaForce"](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084316/) (1982) ([RT link](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/megaforce)). I hadn't seen the movie in decades and was worried looking at a rotten tomato score of 6% that if I watched it, I would be completely disappointed in the movie as an adult. Surprisingly, I didn't realize as a kid that it was actually more of a spoof comedy action movie like a knock-off "Hot Shots" or "Naked Gun" and just completely enjoyed watching it again because it felt like a whole new experience (definitely better than the new G.I. Joe's lol). So what's your movie from your past that you'll always enjoy no matter how cheesy or horrible it may seem?

Then I get to the privacy policy and realize they're using anti-cheat services to monitor your game, I continued reading the user agreement and then had to find their actual privacy policy page because they have it listed under a different url then what they have posted. Some Highlights from the user agreement: > You may not host, provide or develop matchmaking services for the Product, or intercept, emulate or redirect the communication protocols used by Frost Giant in any way, for any purpose, including without limitation unauthorized play over the internet, **network play** (except as expressly authorized by Frost Giant), or as part of content aggregation networks. > You may not organize, promote or **participate in an esports competition** for the Product which has not been licensed by Frost Giant. > **You may not play on another user's Account** > In order to safeguard its licensing rights, when you are using the Product, Frost Giant may monitor your hardware random access memory (RAM) > You understand that the mere presence of unauthorized cheat software on your device, whether or not you use that unauthorized software while playing the Game, may result in Frost Giant exercising its full rights under this Agreement. > Acknowledgments. You acknowledge that: - The Game which is the object of the Alpha or Beta Test is a work in progress and may contain bugs which may cause loss of data and/or damage to your computer system; - You have, or will, back-up your hard drive prior to installation of the Beta; - You have the resources necessary to easily reinstall the operating system for the computer system that you will use to take part in the Alpha or Beta Test as well as to restore any and all data that may be lost; It just goes on and on with some really sketchy stuff, then I get to the privacy policy: > Your contact information/identifiers, such as your name, your gamer id, mailing address, email address, employer, primary language, country, social media credentials. preferred games and date of birth. If you contact us by telephone, we will also retain your telephone number. > Your geolocation data, if your device settings allow us to collect such information. > Your account preference information, such as your contact, communication and marketing preferences. > Your device and browsing information, including non-personally identifiable information about your phone, tablet, computer or device and online browsing activity, which may be automatically collected. This may include IP addresses, unique identifiers, cookie identifiers, browser language, device and browser settings and broad location-based information, and internet service provider information. It may also include information about when and how you accessed and used our Sites, how you navigated to our Sites (such as the date and time of your visit), the links you clicked, **the websites you visited before and after our Sites**, and what you searched for while on our Sites. > Analytics & Interest-Based Ads. We partner with third parties (like sponsors, content providers, and analytics companies) to help us improve our Services and better understand how you interact with them, as well as to support our marketing initiatives and ad campaigns. These companies may collect info from you automatically in connection with your visit. And the really scary part > In particular, we have collected the following categories of personal information from consumers within the last twelve (12) months: - A real name, alias, postal address, unique personal identifier, online identifier, Internet Protocol address, email address, account name, Social Security number, driver's license number, passport number, or other similar identifiers. - A name, signature, Social Security number, physical characteristics or description, address, telephone number, passport number, driver's license or state identification card number, insurance policy number, education, employment, employment history, bank account number, credit card number, debit card number, or any other financial information, **medical information, or health insurance information**. - **Records of personal property**, products or services purchased, obtained, or considered, or other purchasing or consuming histories or tendencies. - Browsing history, search history, information on a consumer's interaction with a website, application, or advertisement. - Physical location or movements. > Third party service providers. - From time to time, Frost Giant may need to transmit your personal data to vendors or service providers that enable us to market, sell, or deliver our services. These service providers may require certain personal information in order to perform specific services on our behalf, such as cloud service and data storage, beta testing, tech support to enhance game operations, chat, customer support, social login, fulfillment and shipping, email and newsletter delivery, conducting surveys, payment processing, tournament operation, anti-cheat and fraud prevention, web hosting or web analytics. Such partners include: Steam Epic Online Services RallyCry Hathora Brevo Eventbrite AWS Sentry.io Google Easy Anti-Cheat GGWP Untapped Kakao Games ModSquad I've stopped playing previous games that use these tactics and programs because there's just too many other games that don't require these that are available. This was a game I was hoping to get back into with some RTS friends I've made along the way, Is this just the way of the world or something to avoid?

Just created a community, what can I do?

Sorry for the vague question but I'm hoping there's a lot I"m missing. I know I can edit the side bar, icon, and banner. Make the community public or private and there's a "mod posting only" option. But is that it? Some things I'm wondering about, - can I turn downvotes off or is that an instance only thing? (fan community, off topic would just be removed) - Is there any other way to manipulate the community page like backgrounds etc? - Flair's or post tags? Any community settings I looked over? - Allowing or disallowing bots (again is this an instance thing?) I'm fine with what it is, just wanted to make sure there wasn't more I was missing with my options in the community. Bonus question, besides crossposting and the "new communities" community sections, is there anything else I should do with a fresh community?
