Biggles: Adventures in Time (1986, 1080p) A pulpy adventure film that combines sweet 80's rock and WWI Dogfights!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-S06lKSCSs

I'd never heard of Biggles, but it's apparently an [extremely popular series of books](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biggles) in the UK based on an ace WWI (and eventually WWII) pilot and his team. The first book was released in 1936, putting it smack-dab in the pulp magazine era. The idea of a movie had been bounced around for many decades, but finally they got the ball rolling in the 80's. The script was complete, and it was about to begin filming when the first Back to The Future was released, and the executives decided they wanted to cash in on the time-travel shtick. They re-wrote the script to accommodate a time-travel aspect, instead of it being purely in the WWI. Seems like that would result in a disaster of a film, but by god they pulled it off. The casting choices were *excellent*, the story is well executed, but the real star of the show are the stunts, practical effects, and the sets! The movie had less than half the budget of Back to the Future, but it really doesn't feel like it, except in one specific special effect. The sets at times make it feel like a higher budget movie than it is, with the WWI trench scenes in particular looking excellent. There's some crazily well shot action scenes in this, and you can tell the director was having an absolute blast with them, and the cast seemed to as well. There aren't really any other movies I can think of that combine WWI dogfights with 80's synth-y rock (from Jon Anderson of Yes, no less!). It's campy, it's pulpy, it's funny, it's great. If you like back to the future or pulp stories, give this one a shot! Also, slightly sad fact, the music video for one of the songs used in the film by The Immortials features one of Peter Cushing's [last appearances on film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwfgKKH6wQc) before his death.

Whenever I respond to someone like that, I assume up front that the person I'm responding to will not change their mind. Taking that for granted, I write purely with the intention of providing a well reasoned counterargument for a third party observer of the conversation, I.e. lurkers, hoping that it prevents someone from being deceived by the content I'm responding to, thus giving them a mental handhold to avoid slipping into some deep bullshit.

I say that as someone who was once fully gripped by religion and conspiracy theories, and it was only after I was finally exposed to some irrefutable rational arguments that I could begin my slow crawl out of that dark pit of ignorance.

The Documentary 'Take Me To Pitcairn' fits the bill, I think. It's about a guy who really wants to visit a super remote island that's difficult to get passage to. Some private boat captain plans to go there, and signs up a bunch of tourists to fund the trip, including the filmmaker.

The whole trip is a giant shitshow from start to finish, and it's oddly compelling to watch.

I love Carlin, but he was an awful defeatest, any hope beaten right out of him, which he admits himself.

Education is, genuinely, the prime issue. Where I agree with Carlin is that better education can't fix our system, because the system itself is fundamentally broken. It'd be better with smarter people, but ultimately would still be corporate captured and self-serving.

What a highly educated populace could mean is a rejection of the current system entirely, in favor of building a new one in its shell cooperatively, with horizontal, decentralized power and the wholesale rejection of profit-motive being the prime focus.

I suspect Carlin would assume humanity is incapable of that, but then again he probably wasn't super familiar with how that actually happened in the Spanish Civil War.

If we manage to pull it off, Carlin would've been happy for once, begrudgingly :p

You don't need 174 pages to tell you to just pick a good index fund (use fossilfreefunds.org to find the least unethical, Vanguard's ESGV is a good compromise IMO), and just hold it and don't think about it until retirement. I.E. the boglehead methodology.

  • Fridge
  • ProdigalFrog ProdigalFrog 2d ago 100%

In the case of refrigerators, there doesn't need to be any trade-off between efficiency and heavy duty. The main thing determining efficiency is primarily where the heat exchanger is positioned (top mounted is the most efficient, but uncommon), and the thickness and quality (R value) of the insulation.

If you add extra insulation to an old heavy duty fridge, it increases its efficiency by 50% or more (depending on the thickness of insulation).

The extra insulation, as a side effect of better efficiency through better temperature retention, will also extend the lifespan of the compressor, which will need to run half as much as normal.

The main reason this isn't done from the factory is cost, and to reduce the physical dimensions of the fridge.

it is as batshit as it appears.

But for us at least, it is quite sinister as well, since Trump it quite literally attempting to instill himself as a dictator to avoid prison, and this is being facilitated by white nationalists, religious zealots, tech billionaires, and an easily decieved under-educated populace that are acting against their own interests.

  • ProdigalFrog ProdigalFrog 3d ago 100%

The problem I have with your logic is that it delves into the line of conspiracy.

Private prisons alone are a multi-billion a year industry, and as with any corporate community with vested interests, they lobby congress to sway them to their interests. If you consider that to be going too far into conspiracy, then I can only offer that this phenomena of a corporate plutocracy has been well studied by respected universities, and compiled into easily digestible books, examples such as:

Affluence and Influence, by Martin Gilens, professor of politics at Princeton University. Martin and a colleague, Benjamin Page, analyzed 1,779 policy outcomes over a period of more than 20 years. They concluded that “economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence.”

Who Rules America by G. Wlliam Domhoff, Distinguished Professor of Sociology at University of California, Santa Cruz. He explores the history of how a corporate plutocracy formed, how their social circles operate and reinforce their positions, and their financial incentives.

None of those people are on the fringe, they are operating purely on verified historical fact and solid scientific rigor.

if it were as bad as you say

There's more people in prisons doing so-cheap-it's-slavery labor now than there were actual slaves in the US before it was abolished.

317K people were arrested for Marijuana in the US in 2020, a low from 500k the previous year.

There are 1.2 Million people incarcerated in the US (40k of those for Marijuana alone), compared to 483K in all of the EU. This is despite the EU having more than double the US population.

they would be arresting people from jaywalking

Drug users were so heavily demonized over so many decades, that we don't really bat an eye if someone is imprisoned for drugs. Do you believe people would be passive if life sentences for jaywalking became a thing?

It’s also generally illegalized outside of the US except for a few specific tourism hotspots

Illegalized, but usually the penalty is only a small fine, not prison as a federal offense, and many of countries in the EU have decriminalized it for personal use, not just tourist hotspots.

Government are very aware of the effects of drugs and was even weaponized during the Opium Wars

my impression of it is that it’s not without risks

Marijuana is nowhere near as dangerous or addictive compared to any other commonly available recreational drug. Cigarettes, Opium, and alcohol, are far more addictive and damaging, all of which create a tremendous amount of societal costs, for families, medical facility overload, and societal.

I won't say people can't become dependent on weed, and kids should probably avoid it, but it inherently has no real withdrawal symptoms compared to any other substance, and is far easier to quit cold turkey than virtually any other drug with no physical harm.

The punishment for marijuana is completely disproportionate to the societal damage it is capable of causing, which in the worst case scenario, is minimal. To justify its criminalization by looking at the damages of opium use is bizarre when all of the above is taken into account. If we were to seriously consider that point of view deserve merit, then we must also seriously consider that unhealthy and addictive food should rightfully be criminalized as well. We have mountains of data and research showing how much societal harm they cause, and how addictive they can be, and in fact, are designed to be.
