I've needed to detect a frequency of an audio signal a couple of times in my life, but I cannot for the love of me remember what does the FFT output actually mean. By adding the return statement you pass the ownership of the string back to main. The unmodified function just took the ownership of the string and deallocated it after printing. Hope this helps
