I have no real opinion on NK but it's a good and sound piece worth reading if you're interested in the cultural warfare/marketing aspect

materially speaking calculations sometimes change when one person involved is incredibly wealthy. he has surely tried it on with a much larger number than that.

It is a real thing in dating sites and whatnot that many ppl won't date below a stated height threshold, in that sense it does literally add difficulty. I have been told "x would never date you, you're too short" on a couple occasions and some other weird remarks over the years. but generally people who are going to filter potential partners by height are generally to be avoided anyway imo

I watched the entire thing. I feel dumber and less informed now than I was before watching. My conclusion: both candidates should be gently placed in a field and set upon by dogs or perhaps wolves.

I did notice one thing - in terms of correcting outright bullshit when possible and asking decent questions I thought the moderation was considerably better than the Biden-Trump one and it did not matter at all, because both candidates were doing the "answer the question you wish they'd asked" thing everyone has now internalized as the least risky way to handle these things. Harris did a slightly different version of this where she adds a "I'm gonna tackle that point by point" type preamble before not doing that.

  • heard a lot of good things about this, but *Severance* remains the only Apple series worth pirating. only made if thru four episodes, will groan through the finale next week. I hate how all crime shows are just ten-hour movies padded out with endless red herrings, arbitrarily withheld information and scenes involving therapists. we used to do this in a tight 90!

There's a general "gym rat" atmosphere to the job-workplace itself which suits me fine though I have like no spare energy to work out on top of doing 8-14 hour house moves. that said I don't see myself going back to computer based work anytime soon, my body likes all this activity too much.

my actual recommendations are trying to sneak in some stretching every morning and lift with yr knees and things that aren't your back as much as possible! also make sure you're getting a lot of rest. I don't seem as injury prone as some of my younger co-workers and I think they're not getting enough sleep.

  • keep it general not to dox yourself and whatnot, just wondering if there's anyone else adopting the fielder method. and also what's the worst thing you have had to pick up and carry somewhere? for me it is a toss up between upright piano, heavy treadmill and slab of granite.

It's not a classic or anything (the whole scenario is pretty op only contrived) but it has some solid laughs, decent performances and doesn't overstay its welcome. Obviously the social commentary is limited/lib AF but that comes with the territory. Sterling K Brown is really good and I'd like to see him get Supporting (to the extent that I care).

really really didn't like it (and I've liked pretty much every other yogurt lanthimos joint). one or two-joke movie stretched to agonizing length. rehashed tim burton garbage aesthetic. one-note supporting characters they did nothing with over 140 mins. totally frictionless / conflict-free - everyone loves bella everywhere she goes and the pathetic men are obviously no match. also a small thing but the "means of production" shit was embarrassingly wrong. I did chuckle at willem dafoe saying "cocaine"

didn't like oppy or barbie either but the trinity test was cool and I get nominating big well-liked event movies even if the america farrera monologue made me want to die

Zone of Interest > Holdovers > American Fiction > Killers of the Flower Moon > Anatomy of a Fall >>>>> Oppenheimer > Barbie > Poor Things

  • keep some in a glass or vase in yr kitchen and just keep waterin. chop some up and fry em in neutral oil, provides a crispy topping and leaves you with some very useful oil (for salad dressing, sauces, etc). or just munch on em. or just look at them if you like

I like watching tom cruise and not a cgi thing actually defy death in the name of shameless entertainment what can I say they are less self-serious, MUCH less h*rny and generally less bloodthirsty than the bond movies. the politics are too incoherent and vague to get offended by and there's no top gun/bond style displays of patriotism or military hardware cause the heroes are essentially stateless and use goofy almost-scifi gadgets that only sometimes work correctly. instead of "they've got lasers now??" type quips they mostly just make goofy faces while performing acts of physical daring really the only thing you have to reckon with is that only through the power of sc*entology can these movies exist at all lastly I love it when ving rhames says things

Seven episode season, watched over 3-4 days. I was really excited for this as a big Coup/StBY fan, but I have to say this was a pretty deflating watch by the end. Politically you are not ever going to find a more openly left-wing scripted show, period, at least not produced in America. That's cool and all, but by the midway point we literally have the Boots surrogate character explaining capitalist exploitation, the need for a movement of workers etc via actual presentations that stop the thing dead in its tracks. My guess is Boots felt like he had one shot at this massive platform and felt the need to be as explicit and didactic as possible. I won't drill into it all here but so many plot elements and little beats feel like prescriptive messages aimed at the predominantly young male audience that will end up watching...at times it drifts into outright edutainment And some of you will say that's a good thing, and I the fairly online leftist is not the target audience....but hoo lord I have to imagine that anyone who is not already onboard with Boots' vision of a world where (spoiler alert) ::: spoiler spoiler superpowered fascists can be defeated with a single Marxist slideshow ::: is gonna turn this off fast. The jolts of humanity (mostly via the performances which are great across the board) and occasional amazing bits of surreal humor got me to the end (I will say there is one sequence in the last episode that justifies my viewing time) but yeah, real letdown for me personally. I really thought StBY nailed the mix of elements whereas here I just felt pandered and preached to... Hope it works better for yalls, big love to boots if you're reading :/

The centre of the country.....the place where it all happens......the ~~big apple~~.....who will our new mayor be after the hated John Tory and his limited hangout situation? Just kidding - barring a huge shakeup in the next few days, there's no suspense. >Four Toronto mayoral candidates are battling to be frontrunner Olivia Chow’s runner-up, a new poll from Mainstreet Research has revealed. >As of Friday, if the election were held today, 31 per cent of decided voters would vote for Chow. Meanwhile, four runners-up are polling similarly and within the poll’s margin of error, with Bailao at 14 per cent, Mark Saunders at 13 per cent, Josh Matlow at 12 per cent and Anthony Furey at 11 per cent. >Mitzie Hunter, Chloe Brown and Brad Bradford have each held onto 6 per cent, 5 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively. We love name recognition, don't we folks? Personally I am planning to skip the 102 named candidates and write in "fuck john tory"

rant zone: very tired of the concept of therapy as cure-all

a few days ago I was having a perfectly nice conversation when they said something only semi jokingly about how putin is "just a guy who needs some therapy" that sparked just a few thoughts i. therapy is literally not for everyone! I have heard many horror stories (esp from non-men of course) about therapy/therapists gone wrong, and moreover some of us are just ding donged treatment resistant yknow? ii. let's say it was for everyone. in this country (klanada) mental health coverage is shit and employer benefits are often not much better. therapy is fuckin expensive. if you can qualify for low cost therapy good for you, btw it's all over a computer screen now (no offense to any but I just can't with that). the idea that it is just a thing you can magically "get" and there aren't barriers, also very annoying. iii. the liberal hyperbolic concept of therapy as cure all (see above example) is one thing but I also hear this kinda simplistic totalizing stuff from leftists all the time and it makes me question whether they're really "empaths" or whatever ok rant over thanks

been skimming thru some essays and whatnot by David Smail, who was a practising clinical psychologist in Britain - I really like his breakdowns of the suspect incentives and broken assumptions underlying a lot of the practices and his overall takes largely resonate with me, since he passed in the 90s, has there been anyone else of note working in this kind of direction?
