Tried a few coffees this year

I think they have an Easter sale on at the moment...

  • This year I started making coffee at home a lot more than I have in the past, mainly due to investing in a new set up. Tried quite a lot of different roasters/beans which has been great. Have a few go to roasters now and a better idea of the beans/roasts I tend to prefer. Here's to 2024!

Scientists claim to have discovered secret to perfect espresso

From what I can tell, relative humidity in the room does reduce the amount of static a little, but still not as much as you would get from performing the RDT they suggest in the study.

Will be interesting to see whether the data behind this study mentions that.

I'm making my way through this in the hopes I don't need to read through the study: https://youtu.be/GuqVUsMPs-U?si=rq0n9pL0bO6Pna-l

Haha. Took me a while to pick up on that. I haven't tried RDT before so wonder how much of a difference it really makes or if it's really minor.

  • Want to stay strong as you get older? Maybe you should have another cuppa
  • yesterdayshero yesterdayshero 12mo ago 100%

Totally. Every week there's a study to say caffeine is bad for you, then the next week there's a study saying it's good for you.

  • We investigated blue-eye glasses to find out if they actually work. This is what we found
  • yesterdayshero yesterdayshero 1y ago 100%

    TL;DR

Overall, based on relatively limited published clinical data, our review does not support using blue-light filtering lenses to reduce eye strain with digital device use. It is unclear whether these lenses affect vision quality or sleep, and no conclusions can be drawn about any potential effects on the health of the retina.

Focused more on speciality coffee, but still an interesting watch.

Oh nice! A little jealous of the end game set up, if there is such a thing.

Yeah I have one as well and I'm really enjoying it. Good to hear it's still going strong. I've only had mine for about 6 months.

  • NSW won’t ban gas in new homes as premier declares ‘I don’t need another complication’
  • yesterdayshero yesterdayshero 1y ago 100%

That's not what's being discussed in the article, nor what's being connected in new home builds, nor what's being done at a large scale in NSW. So no, the gas supply being discussed isn't renewable.

How long have you had the BDB? How are you finding it?

I was going to go for that, but I ended up pledging on the Timemore Sculptor Kickstarter campaign. So waiting for that to arrive now, which likely won't be until end of year.

Agree. But the government also shouldn't be taking around $50k from these people saying that the wait for a visa is around a year, when in reality it may never happen.

  • yesterdayshero yesterdayshero 1y ago 100%

Yeah, I was buying at least 1-2 coffees a day. I only buy around 2-3 a week now (when I'm not at home). I'm also getting to the point where I'm happier with the quality of coffee at home than what I'm getting at a cafe.

Nice. That's a good combo. I'm looking forward to getting an electric grinder. The hand grinder is going well, but would love something a little quicker and easier haha.

It isn't just about emissions though is it? It's a non-renewable as well.

I don't think I ever mastered the aeropress. I prefer the moka pot. I might have to revisit it at some point to see what I was doing wrong.

  • Higher Coffee Consumption Is Associated With Reduced Cerebral Gray Matter Volume
  • yesterdayshero yesterdayshero 1y ago 100%

I'm sure I've missed it, but what exactly have they considered as "high coffee consumption"? Some of their findings show some level of coffee consumption can be beneficial, or inconclusive. Which is usually why most of these studies can be summed up with... just don't overdo it.

  • Was wondering what people's coffee setups are. I'll start. I mainly drink espresso and piccolo's. But also have several Moka pots that only get used once every few months since getting the BDB. * Breville Dual Boiler * Kingrinder K4

I've been gradually making my way through a variety of coffee beans over the last few months and was wondering what recommendations people here have for beans or roasters in Australia. Thought it might also be helpful to anyone who was wanting to try something new but didn't know where to start.

Could we get a community set up for all things coffee? There are a couple around Lemmy already, but thought there should be an aussie based community to discuss local roasters, share set ups and not wonder why everyone is posting summer drink ideas during our winter. Happy to help moderate if needed.
