as a mecha model obsessed madman, i have ended up with Kyoukai Senki model kits without having heard of or watched the show. Most of my knowledge comes from packaging art and google-translated text and the scant few wikis that exist. A cursory google search reveals that at least some people interpret the show as being nationalist, touching on themes like Japan being dominated by foreign governments and declining japanese birth rates. How bad is it, is it worth a watch? its supposedly one of the few recent shows with 2d mecha animation. i read somewhere that China or some province in china banned the show because of its portrayal of one of the leaders of the chinese-coded faction as being involved with human trafficking, even though the faction's higher up leadership retaliates and gets rid of the human trafficker in their faction after its brought to their attention, which seems to me like something the real china would do as one of the few places where billionaires can get a death sentence, and more than the other factions apparently do when corruption is revealed. so it's weird to me that a nationalist japanese fiction would portray China (or the Oceanic Economic something-or-other in the show i think) as actually effectively fighting corruption. Gimme the Based Leftist Take on the show before i watch it and become brainwashed into imperial japan apologia, Hexbears! Is it Cringe, Based, Both, or Incoherent? in terms of the models, i like the angular militaristic designs and smaller scale (models are 1:72 instead of gundam's usual 1:144 scale, meaning the mechs are smaller and therefore slightly more realistic), but i am conflicted about the whole 'most of the mecha are autonomous or remote-operated' thing. I like that most of the mechs (except the china/oceanic faction's Nyuren) CAN have a pilot even if they usually don't though, and i do enjoy a mech-borne drone commander remote operating their squad as they pilot their own craft. The AI chibi animal hologram things on the packaging art look like they would be annoying in the show, i cringe just imagining their helium-pitched voices. it's also cool that the mech hands have 3 fingers and 2 thumbs, i like a slightly de-anthropomorphized mecha that plays around with human proportions and limbs like that. Also the American faction's mecha names are super american-sounding, with names like Jo Hound and Brady Fox, definitely stupid enough to be american, and reminiscent of real vehicles like the M1 Abrams and Bradley APC.

what even is 'masculinity' or 'femininity' it seems like arbitrary aesthetic categories at this point, i want to have breasts and long hair and a less boxy body, and also wear practical clothing with pockets and still be an emotionally unstable insecure weirdo obsessed with mecha and tanks and jets and parkour and martial arts. i'm still going to be a dork who wants to be a Good Person Who Does The Right Thing no matter what i am. i see a lot of presumed and implied definitions of 'masculine' and 'feminine' that seem wayyyyyy gender essentialist to me in this thread, like every time i put my interests aside for someone else its feminine? since when? everyone i know does that sometimes, everyone i know does the opposite too. soldiers have always put their interests aside for someone else (unless they were the leadership lol) and they were mostly men and its considered very masculine profession. is every woman who stands up for themselves 'masculine'? are we going to invalidate people's identities every time they are more dominant or submissive than usual?

western spiritual traditions are farcical, and show no curiosity whatsoever into the various types of religious experience or other anomalous mental states. like the various types of Buddhism have whole lexicons and conceptual maps of all kinds of specific features of consciousness, whereas Christians merely justify whatever whim or gut feeling they have by attributing it to Jesus or God or An Angel and if you do anything like 'meditation' they think you are a satanist or a victim of satanist propaganda. so in typical angloid fashion we steal whatever terms from other cultures we deem useful and forget the entire context or origin or purpose of the concepts we steal.

TL:DR it would be weird to say 'seventh day adventism-like' because there is no specific meditative or mental practices associated with that religious tradition, as whitoids are soulless ice mutant people with primitive barbaric cultures that revolve purely around colonialism (theft) and warfare. the angloid brainpan is incapable of the advanced thought required for spiritual pursuits or even complicated philosophical investigation.

YES its wild how many people think you could just walk around with a sword in the past or just buy them at a shop like in D&D or video games, it varied place to place but a lot of places restricted the open carrying of weapons in towns

Kileak: The DNA Imperative (a PS1 game i've played emulated on DuckStation)

its a real-time FPS dungeon crawler where you in a mech (power armor? kinda hard to tell, but i think its a small mech more than a armor suit) explore a tunnel complex full of cybernetic combat drones.

the gameplay is kinda wack, you have to shoot like 30 or 40 shots (in single shot with the base weapon, a lot of rapid button mashing if you want to survive) at basically every enemy to kill them, the other weapons are super hard to find ammo for, and the tank controls in first person are pretty wild (in a fun way. you can move diagonally super fast for some reason. controls remind me of armored core 2), but it has such a sense of atmosphere its like one of those haunted PS1 videogames. Its basically like a slower paced Doom clone with more simplistic level architecture, most levels are linear corridors with some 90 degree turns and 4x4 and 6x6 rooms spread around. theres no jump or crouch or anything, just forward, back, strafe buttons with either L1/2 or R1/2 buttons, and you can't look up or down except by holding R1 and L1 to look up and R2 and L2 to look down at pre-defined angles. it doesnt matter since the game has aim assist, the crosshair moves to lock onto the enemy nearest the center/closest to you (not sure which).

YES ninja were not standardized, 'ninja sword' is like saying 'gangster rifle', a criminal/terrorist/assassin will use whatever they have to accomplish their goal, they usually can't or don't build their own weapons. they don't have uniforms and tables of equipment like a military does.

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A FUCKING "NINJA SWORD", ninja did not have standardized equipment or tactics or leadership. They were assassins and spies, they would have no use or legal cover story to carry a sword and would be immediately caught.

a KATANA is a SAMURAI SWORD you fucking SWORD PHILLISTINES

why? BECAUSE IT WAS USED EXCLUSIVELY BY SAMURAI

they would EXECUTE YOU for OWNING A SWORD if you were not a samurai

Heck, the samurai would hide next to roads at night and MURDER RANDOM PEASANTS that crossed their path just to TEST THEIR NEW SWORDS

If it didn't kill in 1 stroke, it was a SHIT SWORD

and it was PERFECTLY LEGAL because JUST LIKE EURO KNIGHTS the samurai were WARLORD KILLER MAFIOSOS who survived by PILLAGE AND OPRESSION

you idiot anglos INVENTED the term SAMURAI SWORD because your IDIOT ICE MUTANT MOUTHS can't pronounce something as simple as "KA-TA-NA" so USE YOUR OWN WORDS IDIOT BRITS

i fucking love parkour but i've always been a Large Adult Failchild who has a hard enough time making my lethargic and depressed ass do 30 pushups and 30 squats every week or so, plus every time i have ever tried to run regularly something goes wrong with one of my ankles or feet (i think something is fucked with my tendons or ligaments or something but i can't afford doctors or anything so who fucking knows) and i have to take a long enough break that the habit doesn't form. so, much like being famous or being an artist or being somewhat financially secure, Parkour is a distant, impossible fantasy for me.

  • so i've wondered for a long time about how leftists use the terms 'materialism' and 'idealism', and how it relates to those terms usage in broader philosophical discussions on epistemology. i may be incorrect in my interpretations, but it seems to me that leftist uses of the term (even its usage in some of marx's writings, from what little i've read) are such that 'materialist' means 'understands that the material conditions of a society drive its development via dialectical processes' and that 'idealist' means 'focuses on artificial/socially constructed ethical or legal principles (such as 'freedom' and 'democracy' and 'rule of law' and 'free speech') rather than material conditions of society like quality of life, literacy, etc.'. the broader philosophical definitions of these terms are slightly different, however. epistemologically, a 'materialist' is someone who believes that we can (and do) directly apprehend the mind-independent external world. this is contrary to epistemological idealism, which argues that we can only ever know the contents of our own mind. we can use these contents to infer things about 'true reality' but can never truly verify them. ontologically, materialism argues that all of reality can be described in terms of physics, or that all facts of the universe are causally dependent on or reducible to physical processes. this is again opposed to Idealism, which argues that existence is in some way irreducibly and fundamentally mental. so my first question for you beautiful posters is, are my perceptions of these definitions and usages overall correct or incorrect? How exactly does Marx (or Engels or any other marxist philosopher) use these terms, and do they intend an epistemological, ontological, or other interpretation? am i missing something fundamental about the philosophical definitions or about the colloquial/leftist usage? What's the deal with that 'philosophy is pointless, the goal is to change the world' quote, is understanding reality not a benefit for efficiently manipulating it? My next point, is that it seems to me like Marx and Engel's Dialectical Materialism, or at least the political program and methods of Socialism/Communism, are not necessarily at all incompatible with *either* philosophical Idealism or Materialism, in terms of epistemology or ontology. Neither is necessarily incompatible with basic empiricism, but is rather a difference in interpretation of what our empirical knowledge is. Whether reality is fundamentally mental or matter, it consists of opposing energies and dialectical processes that play out in our experience with the extrinsic appearance of physical matter. Whether the world is in the mind or 'really out there', our experiences of it are the same. A bit ago i stumbled across [this article](https://philarchive.org/rec/CASMIT) that seemed to be making a similar point, a point i've never really seen made by anyone else before. I haven't read past the abstract yet, and It seems like someone random person's college dissertation or thesis or something so I'm probably not well read enough to interpret this without context, so i was wondering if anyone had seen any similar discourse? What would Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, or Mao say about this line of thought? is it a heresy against socialism, a useless detour into pointless philosophical questions that serve no practical purpose for the revolution, or is it something potentially useful in framing Marxism's relationship to epistemology and ontology?

its october and the only horror movies i've watched are scream 1-3. they are ok for what they are (deconstruction of horror tropes via murder mystery), but i need something spicier. something existentially horrifying, not just a wrinkly monster chase or a crazy guy hacking up white girls. something that follows you out of the movie and changes how you think about the world for a few days before you're normal again. stuff that pulls at the threads of your understanding of reality. a lot of so called psychological thrillers do this but thats not specifically what i'm looking for as much as existential terror. since i created this post i'll start with suggestions of my own 1 - SKINAMARINK watch this without any research or info going in. all i will say is that there is limited dialogue and the amount of times you see a face or character asymptotically approaches zero. watch while stoned for maximum effect. 2 - They Look Like People psychological thriller, avoiding spoilers but i'll say that it mayyybe leans into some problematic ableist tropes relating to mental health common to the horror genre. i have a friend that loves this movie and relates to it strongly for mental health reasons though so i might be over- or under- analyzing. 3 - The Lighthouse monochrome period piece. 2 boys 1 lighthouse. you can probably predict how this goes but the execution is so worth it, the actors are amazing and the cinematography is excellent. thats pretty much all i got, i haven't seen that many movies.
